St. Louis, MO – Saint Louis FC has agreed to a contract with midfielder Octavio Guzman, defender Wesley Charpie, and midfielder Mats Bjurman, pending USL and United States Soccer Federation approval.
Born in Guadalajara, Mexico, Octavio Guzman began his collegiate career at Chico State before signing for Sacramento Republic FC in 2014. He started 22 of the 33 matches and scored three goals during their 2014 championship season, including one in the final. During the 2015 campaign, Guzman netted three goals and three assists while playing in every match that year. Guzman finished with two goals in 27 appearances in 2016 for Sacremento Republic FC.
"Octavio has been a main stay in the USL since the 2014 season. He has Championship experience with Sacramento that will be valuable to us. He covers a lot of ground in the midfield and can also play in the back line. We see him adding to us in the central midfield," said Alumbaugh.
Originally from Tarpon Springs, Florida, Wesley Charpie played collegiately at South Florida with 81 appearances, 5 goals and 21 assists. In 2014, Charpie appeared in 16 matches and scored 2 goals for Reading United AC in the Premier Development League (PDL). During the 2015 MLS SuperDraft, Charpie was selected in the second round (29th overall) by Toronto FC. Charpie played the 2015 season for Toronto II in the USL – logging 1634 minutes and registering one assist in his rookie season. This past season he played 1793 total minutes over 22 appearances for the club.
"Wes is another versatile and steady defender. He garnered a lot of minutes in Toronto the past two seasons and is experienced in the USL," said Alumbaugh. "He adds to us in the back line as he can play both wide and centrally. His decision making and mentality as a pro are qualities we really like."
Mats Bjurman played collegiately at UC Irvine, making 81 appearances and scoring five goals during his career. While at UC Irvine, Bjurman also played for PDL side Orange County Blues U-23, making 32 appearances and scoring two goals. During the 2016 season, Bjurman made his OC Blues first-team debut and logged 1495 minutes with one goal and four assists for the club.
"Mats is a player that was on Preki's list when he arrived. There is a quality to him in the attacking third that fits how we will play," stated Alumbaugh. "He likes to come inside and get to goal, and he's a very honest player with a big upside. Likewise, Mats is another player coming to us with playoff experience."
