St. Louis, MO – Saint Louis FC stunned conference-leaders Charleston Battery with a 1-0 victory in front of 5,243 people at Toyota Stadium on Saturday night.
Saint Louis FC took all three points through Octavio Guzman’s free kick in the 72nd minute after his earlier free kick conversion was waved off by the referee. The team will face Louisville City FC at Toyota Stadium next Saturday at 7:30 pm CT.
The first half started with a Charleston chance as STLFC goalkeeper Adam Grinwis was forced to make a diving save on Heviel Cordoves’ effort in the 14th minute. New STLFC arrival Daniel Jackson almost made a dream debut as he was played behind the Charleston defense in the 21st minute but had his shot saved by Odisnel Cooper. Jackson had another good opportunity in the 44th minute as he found some space at the top of the box but was denied again by Cooper. Charleston came close to taking the lead before halftime with a free kick just outside the box but the attempt went over the bar to end the half.
The second half saw Saint Louis FC earn an early free kick outside the box which was converted by Guzman in the 50th minute, only for the referee to disallow the goal after judging a foul in the defensive wall. Guzman would get his free kick goal in the 73rd minute, however, as his effort beat the keeper at the near post for the only goal of the contest to earn all three points for Saint Louis FC.
