EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Wintery weather was not able to stop Saint Louis Football Club from playing its first preseason friendly of the season against the SIUE Cougars at Korte Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
"I've been in the Southern Illinois community since 1994, and it's great to see just as much excitement about the game here as there is in St. Louis," STL FC Head Coach Dale Schilly said. "I'm glad we had the opportunity to bring the team over here so they can see the support they have from fans across the river."
SIUE forward Jabari Danzy opened the scoring when he got the home team on the board in the 23rd minute. Danzy took a pass from TC Hull and chipped it in over the STL FC goalkeeper.
However, Saint Louis FC found the equalizer just four minutes later off a free kick to tie the score at 1-1.
"Our guys did a good job of attacking the ball and making it tough on their goalkeeper," STL FC forward Mike Ambersley said. "It was a huge goal for us and it gave us the momentum back."
Not only was Saturday the first competitive match for STL FC, it also represented the first game for new SIUE Head Coach Mario Sanchez.
"I want to thank Saint Louis FC and Dale for allowing us this opportunity," Sanchez said. "Our players enjoyed getting out there and battling it out against the pros. It was certainly a chance to see where we stand."
Saint Louis FC returns to the pitch on Thursday when it faces USL rival Oklahoma City Energy in Springfield, Mo. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on the campus of Missouri State University.
