CHARLESTON, S.C. - Jamiel Hardware scored his second goal in as many games to give Saint Louis FC a 1-1 draw at Charleston Battery on Saturday night at MUSC Health Stadium.
Saint Louis FC is now 5-9-8 (23 pts.) on the season and is 4-3-4 on the road. Charleston moves to 9-4-9 (36 pts.) with the draw.
"It's the time of the year when it's tough to have a full team to choose your starting 11," Head Coach Dale Schilly said. "The guys followed the game plan perfectly. It was a great goal from Jamiel to give us the lead, but it's difficult to close out a game down a man."
After a scoreless first 45 minutes, the game picked up in the second half.
Hardware put the visitors in front against the run of play in the 60th minute. After trying to play Jordan Roberts through with a lofted pass, the Jamaican continued his run and slotted the loose ball past Charleston goalkeeper Odisnel Cooper.
Charleston increased the pressure going down a goal, and the hosts were given an added advantage when Oskar Gasecki picked up a second yellow card to reduce STL FC to 10 men in the 84th minute.
The Battery would evenutally score the equalizer five minutes later, with substitute Heviel Cordoves heading home off a corner kick.
Mike Ambersley had a chance to give Saint Louis FC all three points in stoppage time, but Cordoves once again made an impact by clearing the St. Louis native's shot off the line.
Minutes later, Kingsley Bryce was shown a straight red card for a tackle on Shawn Ferguson, taking the visitors to nine men for the final moments of the match.
"I'm very proud of each of the players for carrying out the game plan and being disciplined in our approach," Schilly added. "We fought like heck while dealing with some inconsistent referee decisions. It was a great effort from our guys."
STL FC and Charleston Battery will meet again on Thursday at World Wide Technology Soccer Park. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
