2016 Coaching Change

2016 Coaching Change

Saint Louis FC has relieved Dale Schilly from head coaching duties and announced Tim Leonard as Interim Head Coach for the remainder of the 2016 season.  The decision was made following the team's performances over the last eight weeks with the season's overall goal of qualifying for the playoffs and USL Championship.  "We needed to send a message to all the fans that this matters. Winning matters. Making the playoffs matters," says Executive Director Patrick Barry. "We thank Coach Schilly and his family for their investment and dedication to the position, the club, and St. Louis soccer."  The decision was made with thoughts beyond 2016 as the global search for Schilly's successor is already underway.

Coach Schilly reflected on his time as Head Coach of Saint Louis FC.  "I want to thank Jim Kavanaugh, Tom Strunk, the Board of Directors and the entire St. Louis Scott Gallagher as well as the Saint Louis FC Family for the opportunity to be the inaugural coach for the Saint Louis FC.  It was an honor and a privilege.  I love the organization, staff, team, fans and particularly the players.  I wish the team the best of luck to achieve the goal we had set at the beginning of the season.  My family and I appreciate everyone's support over the last couple of years."

Tim Leonard, who served as Assistant Coach under Schilly, has been named Interim Head Coach.  Leonard was a four-year letter winner at Saint Louis University and served as captain for the Billikens' 1997 Final Four appearance.  After college, Leonard spent several years as a professional player before beginning his coaching career.  "It's bittersweet," Leonard said about his new interim position.  "We all have the utmost respect for Dale as a coach and a person.  We are excited and driven as a team. We have seven games left and an opportunity to put this team where it belongs, into the playoffs.  This is our only focus at this time"

"We're expecting this move to energize the team and give us the push necessary to reach the playoffs.  We have high expectations for this team and the results over the recent string of games necessitated this change," GM Jeremy Alumbaugh added.

Announced at the press conference this afternoon was the addition of Matt Caution as Interim Assistant Coach for the remainder of the season.  Caution is the current boy's director of FC Missouri/ Bayern Munich and Technical Director of the Missouri Thorns FC. He holds the career points record at Missouri State where he played before being drafted by the Dallas Burn of the MLS in 1998.  A St. Charles native, Matt has 14 years of professional soccer experience and 25 years as a coach.  He currently holds a USSF National "B" license and NSCAA National Premier Diploma.

Alumbaugh commenting on the last 24 hours, "The addition of Matt brings a raw passion and energy to our coaching staff.  We expect a heightened level of intensity and urgency from players and coaches.  The playoffs are our goal right now, we have an opportunity to get there for the first time as a club and that's really exciting.  The next six weeks' focus for everyone in the club is to do their part to make the playoffs."
